What is ESTA?
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an electronic permit to enter the USA for citizens of countries covered by the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It entitles you to a tourist or business stay for up to 90 days – and only applies to people travelling by air or sea.
How long is ESTA valid for?
Two years – or until your passport expires, if that happens first. During this time, you can visit the USA multiple times (provided each visit lasts a maximum of 90 days).
Who needs ESTA?
ESTA is mandatory if:
- you are a citizen of a country covered by the Visa Waiver Program,
- you are flying to the USA for tourist, business or transit purposes,
- you are planning a stay of no longer than 90 days,
- you are travelling by plane or ship.
Who does NOT need ESTA?
- people with a US visa (e.g. tourist B1/B2),
- US citizens or holders of a Green Card,
- travelling by land from Canada or Mexico - although it is still worth checking the current border regulations.
