The Gambia, the smallest country on mainland Africa, stretches along the Gambia River, bordered by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Banjul. The nation boasts a rich history dating back to the kingdoms of Ghana and Songhai, and gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965. A tropical climate brings heavy rainfall during the wet season, while the landscape features savannas, gallery forests, and mangroves. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to May, when temperatures range from 24 °C to 30 °C.
