The airport was opened in 1954 replacing Wingfield Aerodrome, Cape Town’s previous airport. In 2012, Cape Town International Airport handled 8.5 million passengers, becoming the second busiest airport in South Africa.
Cape Town International Airport has been distinguished several times. In 2013, it received, among others, the international SKY TRAX World Airport Awards in the category: the best airport in Africa.
Hotel infrastructure is located in Cape Town and it includes, for instance, Holiday Inn Express Cape Town Center and the Taj Cape Town Hotel.

Bus
My CiTi Bus line connects the airport with Cape Town city centre. The starting station is located near the railway station at Hertzog Boulevard. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the city centre by bus. 53 ZAR (one-way) tickets can be
purchased at the airport or at the Cape Town starting station. The bus stop at the airport is located on the doorstep of the terminal.
First bus from Cape Town departs at 4:20 a.m. and runs every 20 minutes. First bus from the airport departs at 5:00 a.m. and runs every 20 minutes. For security reasons airport personnel recommend that travelers use the only officially
authorized taxi company, Touch-Down Taxis. The agency can be contacted on: +27 (0) 83 652 0786. Cape Town International Airport is located approximately 12 miles (20 km) from the city centre. To get to the airport drive the N2 highway
towards the airport, then take exit 16 onto Airport Approach Rd that leads straight to the destination.

There are five parking zones on the airport's premises which totally gives 7399 parking spaces. Short-stay car parks are numbered 1-4, whereas number 5 is a long-stay one. P1 and P2 parkades have designated places for disabled
people.

Shopping – a variety of retail outlets, including: clothing retailers, confectionery, duty-free shops, music shops, bookshops, pharmacy, and souvenir shops.
Car hire – currently nine car rental agencies operate at Cape Town Airport. Their offices are located in the building between P3 and P4 parkades.
Gastronomy – a wide range of gastronomic services: cafés, restaurants, fast food restaurants. The biggest number of cafés and restaurants is located in the open–access zone on the ground floor and the third level.
