    Florence
Florence, the capital of Tuscany, lies in central Italy on the River Arno at the foot of the Apennines. The city, which was the capital of Italy between 1865 and 1871, now has around 362 thousand inhabitants. It is famous for its Renaissance architecture, and its historic centre is on the UNESCO list. The cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio are all worth visiting. The climate is temperate Mediterranean, and the best months to visit are in spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild.
